5 Tips for For Maintaining Healthy Eating Habits

Whether you’re ready for it or not, having kids changes the way you eat. You become more conscious of ingredients, look for more convenience, and often in an effort to lose those last few stubborn pounds of baby weight, try to find foods that will fill you up without filling you out. It’s not easy, but Michael Wystrach and Carter Comstock, founders the weight-loss and wellness delivery based food program, Freshly, are making it easier. Here are their “top 5 health tips” for busy parents looking to maintain healthy eating habits and shed pounds.

Avoid Sugar

It’s no secret that both kids and parents love sugar. According to a study by JAMA Internal Medicine, 71.4% of U.S. adults are consuming more than their recommended daily sugar intake. For optimal health, avoid it! Excessive sugar intake is linked to obesity, heart disease, metabolic issues, dangerous inflammation in the body and many other serious conditions. It’s a health epidemic the majority of parents don’t know how to combat because it’s in many foods we think are healthy and good for us. But don’t forget, your eating and fitness habits influence your children tremendously. Help yourself and the rest of the family detox from sugar by making simple switches every day. For example, swap out sugary breakfast cereals for wholesome egg scrambles. Change your family’s habits and every member will begin feeling better.

Take Advantage of Quick, Efficient Workouts

Who has time to hit the gym when they have to take the kids to soccer practice and make a wholesome dinner? Not many. But even on the busiest of days, you can fit in a great workout. Limit your workouts to 30-45 minutes max. This will force you to focus on your workout in order to maximize your time. Even better, get an amazing workout in as little as 4 minutes with Tabata training (20 seconds on, 10 seconds rest of any exercise for 4 min). These short workouts are efficient, intense and will energize you through your busy day.

Plan Ahead

We all tend to eat what is available and what’s convenient. If candy and chips are in the pantry, guess what we will reach for come snack time? And we all know what happens when someone orders pizza at the office. Make sure to take time out every week to stock your fridge with fresh fruits, vegetables, healthy nuts and seeds. Cut them up, package them in individual containers for snacks or meals…whatever you need to do to stay on track! Making a healthy trail mix (we recommend an assortment of tree nuts, some raisins, seeds and dark chocolate) and make sure it is easily accessible. You will love it and your kids won't even know they are being healthy when they grab a handful!

Focus on Food Quality, Not Calories

Put your calorie counting and scale fearing days behind you and embrace clean eating and all the weight loss benefits that come with it! We love the simplicity of the Paleo diet, which is all about eating the right foods, NOT restricting how much food you eat. Eat high quality meats, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, and healthy oils (like olive oil and coconut oil) and you will be amazed at how effective your body is at self-regulating with the right fuel.Focus on eating the right foods and you’ll likely find you’re feeling great, not to mention more satisfied and more confident in your jeans!

Watch What You Drink

Water is your best friend when you’re trying to lose weight. Staying hydrated has numerous benefits, including promoting optimal physical and mental health, a healthy metabolism and digestive system, all while flushing out dangerous toxins. A lot of us don't realize how much sugar we are consuming through beverages, and soda and fruit juices - all of which are sugar bombs that can take your health progress to a screeching halt. If you still miss a something sweet, use stevia or a little honey to sweeten your drinks or try making your own flavored water by adding fresh fruit and vegetables to it and letting it sit! It’s easy and the flavor combinations are endless!
